Carpet anatomy 101
Every rug begins its journey as a looped pile (a term meaning how the fibers are attached to the backing), such as the Berber or Level Loop styles. These two rugs are durable enough to stand up to the heaviest foot traffic. They either remain that way or cut into piles of various heights.
High, low, and medium piles
The primary cut pile has short, evenly cut yarns and a fuzzy look. It's great for all levels of foot traffic. Saxony is a cut pile with slightly longer yards, and it comes in two versions: Saxony Straight (or Plush) with densely packed fibers that give it a soft, velvety feeling. This is best for low traffic rooms, such as the bedroom, because it shows vacuum marks and footprints. Saxony Texture (or "Trackless") does not show any marks, so it's a good choice for any room.
High pile rugs have long, loose fibers like the shag, or they can be twisted so tightly they curl, like the frieze. Low pile rugs are the easiest to keep clean and durable; this stylish flooring is often used in busy, fashion-oriented offices. Cut and loop rugs are as they sound, with the various fiber heights creating patterns, such as pin-dot, diamond, geometric, etc.
